What we were asked to do
Greenpipe was involved in the project to implement an efficient and high-performance drainage solution both in the construction area and, subsequently, in the completed building.
For the client, it was important to ensure both the functionality of the system—to guarantee that the yard would always be well-drained even in the event of heavy rainfall—and load resistance to ensure suitability for heavy goods vehicle maneuvers.
The context
Mantua, one of the most important cities of the Italian Renaissance and a strategic confluence point for trade routes between Northern and Southern Europe, returns to this “key role” by hosting the “Campus South” within its territory. This new Adidas logistics hub is so named because it is intended to supply the retail chain and online customers of the German brand throughout Southern Europe.
The center will be managed by Kuehne Nagel, a Swiss company and world leader in logistics and transport, present in over 100 countries with more than 1,300 sites.
The project
A logistics giant, Kuehne Nagel, and a sportswear giant, Adidas: from their operational alliance, a major distribution hub will be born in Mantua. This new logistics center is called “Campus South” because, once construction is complete, goods will depart from there to supply 19 countries in the Southern European region, from the Iberian Peninsula to the Balkans.
Adidas and Kuehne Nagel—a Swiss company with 76,000 employees worldwide and over 17 billion in turnover—have jointly chosen to focus on an outlying area of the city of Mantua to develop the project and create a logistics hub capable of supplying both the network of Adidas-affiliated stores and the vast number of consumers ordering online.
The investment to build the new “giant” with a surface area of 130,000 square meters is 300 million euros.
An important aspect highlighted during the presentation is environmental compatibility, which will go hand in hand with cutting-edge technologies. In fact, the hub will be zero-emission thanks to its own photovoltaic system; packaging will be made of sustainable materials, and inside, advanced systems will allow for the sorting of 18,000 packages per hour, thanks to a 20 km network of conveyor belts and the use of 675 automated shuttles.
