What we were asked to do
Configure a specialized stormwater drainage system for viaducts, capable of integrating within the concrete deck structure in compliance with AECON Group Inc. technical specifications, ensuring hydraulic efficiency and long-term durability under Canadian climatic conditions.
The context
The project is part of the urban mobility enhancement plan for the Greater Toronto Area with the extension of Line 5 LRT (Light Rail Transit), a high-capacity hybrid transit system. In the section between Scarlett Road and Jane Street, the infrastructure crosses the Humber River floodplain. To safely traverse an area historically subject to flood risk, construction of an elevated guideway was chosen.
The project
The project developed within a context of international excellence and synergy, with Greenpipe working closely with BG-Graspointner Canada and General Contractor AECON Group Inc., a Canadian leader in major civil works responsible for the structural component. The challenge was to combine the rigorous engineering requirements of the infrastructure with the suitability of the drainage system to withstand structural loads and atmospheric agents.
Greenpipe's Solution
Following a preliminary feasibility study, Greenpipe developed a custom solution with a fully customized product: drainage outlet body manufactured in stainless steel, a material selected to provide maximum resistance to corrosion caused by atmospheric agents and de-icing salts; high-performance cover systems, with SMART 300 D400 ductile iron grates, ideal for supporting the loads and dynamic stresses of the line.
The design achieved the perfect balance between material durability, structural integration, constructability, and hydraulic performance
