Flame traps

Greenpipe designs and manufactures flame traps for the drainage of flammable and toxic liquids inside tunnels.

Connected to the main drainage pipe, flame traps (also known as “fire-stop manholes”) perform their function thanks to an internal siphoning system: the water at the bottom is able to stop oxygen access and the resulting combustion due to the lack of air exchange.

The materials used for the manholes—concrete, galvanized steel, ductile iron, and stainless steel—besides being resistant to hydrocarbons, are included in the list prepared by the Fire Department among those “to be considered as belonging to fire reaction class A1 without having to be subjected to tests.”

Thanks to the experience gained from our presence and work conducted on various construction sites, Greenpipe is now able to produce manholes with various characteristics. For this reason, the Greenpipe range of siphoned flame traps is highly modular and can be customized based on the needs of designers and the intrinsic characteristics of the various tunnels involved.

Features

Liquid Collection
Firebreak manholes facilitate the collection of liquids, including flammable ones, from accidental spills.
Flame Reduction
The manholes prevent flame propagation in case of fire, keeping it localized.
Water recovery
In the event of a fire, firebreak manholes perform the function of recovering water from the fire protection system.
Seepage drainage
Firebreak manholes allow for the drainage of water resulting from structural seepage.
Rainwater Collection
Firebreak manholes enable the collection of rainwater from outside that is carried into the tunnel by passing vehicles.
